Music'scool teachers tested and reviewed Unquendor Guitars
Another milestone for Unquendor Guitars.
This afternoon I visited Music’scool in Waalwijk in the Netherlands to have my guitars put through their pases and reviewed by two professional guitarists.
Ron van Beijnen (Ten Stories High, Mission Bluesband) and Thijs de Jong (Present Danger) took the time to test 2 of my guitars and give their honest opinions.
Both Ron and Thijs are both guitar teachers at Music’scool of which Ron is the founder.
Besides teaching guitar they are both regularly found on stage as well.
Who better to ask if they would take some time to test my guitars?
I had taken lessons from both Ron and Thijs in the past and hadn’t spoken to them in years when I asked Ron if he would review and test the guitars for me.
Ron immediately said yes and invited Thijs to join.
They both were enthusiastic about testing my guitars and after some planning we got together and had a great afternoon playing and talking about guitars.
Thijs being a more metal oriented player tested the Purple Nessa on both her clean tones as well as her ability to be used for shredding. He found she preformed very well without having to do any concessions to his playing style.
As with Ron, Thijs was also impressed and commended me on the quality and feel of this guitar.
This Nessa was his favorite when it comes to the esthetics. He found she has a powerful appearance without having a to aggressive look due to both the color and use of materials.
Again I got nothing but positive feedback from Thijs on this Nessa model.
And where Ron found the Neck a tad to thick Thijs didn’t seem to mind at all.
He liked the extra ‘bite’ from the pickups in this Nessa over the warmer tones from the Purple Nessa.
He could play both his rhythm parts as well as leads seemingly effortless.
The bottom cut-out on the Nessa models was considered a very thought after feature which makes the guitars very comfortable when playing it in a more ‘classic’ playing position.
Ron first started playing the ‘Purple Nessa’ and although he found it a bit heavy was positively surprised by both the sound and the playability.
He especially liked the bright and sparkly sound from the neck pickup when playing clean and the added warmth when adding some crunch.
Although the guitar was put through her pases thoroughly she stayed perfectly in tune.
Overall he was very impressed by this guitar and would happily play this guitar some more.
Next up… the Nessa in Mahogany and Walnut
Ron instantly liked this one.
The lesser weight in comparison to the Purple Nessa was considered as more comfortable.
It was said she was very easy to play and without much effort.
The only remark Ron had on this guitar was about the D-profile and thickness of the neck.
The neck was slightly to thick to his taste.
But even with this neck profile he still enjoyed playing this guitar and made her produce some great bluesy leads.
From the two guitars Ron said he likes the looks and feel of this Nessa but would prefer the neck shape of the Purple Nessa.
Something to consider for me. I will see what I can do on a next build.
This play testing by two great guitar players and the feedback I got has been a great confidence booster.
It was very inspiring to see them genuinely enjoyed playing these guitars. And a great confirmation that I’m on the right track with Unquendor Guitars.
The concept for the Nessa model was again proven to be spot on. Being able to, by the use of different materials and finishes, make essentially the same guitar model appeal to 2 very different players in terms of style.
Ron preferred the looks of the Mahogany & Walnut Nessa while Thijs was more drawn towards the Purple Nessa.
They both agreed on one thing though and that was on the overall quality, playability and craftsmanship. Playability being the one thing I was worried about the most. Could my guitars stand up to the scrutiny of professional guitarists?
I am very glad both guitars passed the tests with flying colors.
Both Thijs and Ron really enjoyed playing the 2 Nessa guitars and said they would happily take them out on stage. Maybe in the near future…
I would like to thank both Ron and Thijs for taking the time to help me with their feedback and play testing my guitars.
